After taking damage while fighting the invading Ork fleet at the Luoyang system, the Chaos Fractious Fleet decided to regroup. As reinforcements were already on their way to the system from several different quarters, and heavy damage inflicted to the Ork fleet in the last engagement the Chaos Warmaster did not expect much difficulty in destroying the last of the Ork invaders.
Deployment
The Ork Fleet with a pair of mercenary Chaos cruisers sets up defensively to protect their transport craft, intent on landing a party of Orks on the planet despite the squadrons of bombers being launched at them from the planet's surface.
The Chaos fleet can be seen in the distance spanning the entire length of the shorter board edge.
Turn 1-3
The Chaos warmaster ordered his ships to All Ahead Full!, and nearly every ship in the Chaos fleet obeyed blasting forward at top speed.
After deploying their troops to the surface of the planet the Ork escorts attempted to make a run at the Chaos fleet. This predictably did not go well with all of the transport ships being destroyed, and inflicting no damage at all. The rest of the Ork fleet hid within the planet's atmosphere safe from the Chaos fleet's long range guns, waiting for their chance to leap out and strike once a target was in range.
Turn 4
Seeing the lone Slaughter cruiser ahead of the rest of the Chaos fleet the Ork Onslaught escort squadron jumped into high orbit, and Locked On to the Chaos vessel. After a withering volley of fire the Slaughter was crippled despite her captain issuing the order to Brace for Impact!
With nearly the entire Chaos fleet able to target them the Onslaughts did not last long. The initial Chaos volleys of weapons battery fire inflicted very little damage, but lance fire from several Hades class heavy cruisers managed to wipe out all of the Ork escorts.
Turn 5-6
Finally the last of the Ork fleet leaves the safety of the planet to engage the Chaos fleet. The Terror Ship heads straight at the crippled Slaughter cruiser, while the two mercenary Murder cruisers use the planet to shield themselves from the majority of the Chaos fleet while taking lance shots at the Slaughter as well. Without even needing the help of the Chaos mercenaries the Terror Ship manages to hulk the previously damaged Chaos cruiser.
The Chaos fleet again responds by hulking the Terror Ship that had shown itself to the bulk of the Chaos fleet. Meanwhile the speedier Chaos Iconoclast and Idolator escorts move around the planet in order to fire on the skulking mercenary Murder cruisers. The escort's fire is absorbed by the enemy shields, but a wave of bombers hits home crippling lead vessel.
The last enemy cruisers move to fire with maximum effectiveness, but only manage to do one point of damage on two separate ships in the Chaos fleet (even while forgetting that one of the ships was crippled and that they were both Braced for Impact!). And of course with so much firepower aimed at them the mercenaries are promptly demolished in a hail of weapon battery and lance fire. we didn't bother adding up VP as it was an obvious. . .
[Chaos Victory]
Unfortunately for the Chaos fleet both of the lightly damaged cruisers fluffed their 2+ survival roll for the campaign, and are now being sent to refit.
